Sheffield United snap up defender until the end of the season

Martin Cranie has signed a contract with Sheffield United until the end of the season, as confirmed by their official club website.

The experienced defender joined the Blades on a short-term contract in August following his release by fellow Championship side Middlesbrough in the summer.

Cranie, who is 32 years-old, has provided back-up for United’s defence this season. He has started twice for Chris Wilder’s side in league games against Nottingham Forest and Wigan Athletic.

He has got bags of experience in the Football League and is a useful squad player for the Blades. He has racked up just under 400 appearances so far in his career for the likes of Southampton, Portsmouth, Coventry City, Barnsley and Huddersfield Town.

After tying him down on a deal until the end of this campaign, United boss Chris Wilder has told their club website: “Martin is an excellent professional and has been a valuable member of the squad this season.

“He’s zero maintenance, he just comes in and works hard and when called upon, he’s been ready and let no-one down.”

Cranie has got experience of getting promotion to the Premier League. He played a part in Huddersfield’s promotion from the Championship in 2017 under David Wagner so knows what it takes to get out this division.

This know-how will come in handy for the promotion chasing Sheffield United between now and the end of the season.
