Sunderland to make third and final bid for Championship striker

Sunderland will make a third and final bid for Wigan Athletic striker Will Grigg, according to the Northern Echo.

The Northern Ireland international has been the Black Cats’ top target in this January transfer window but they have seen two bids knocked back by the Latics so far.

Sunderland will make one last move for Grigg in a push to persuade him to drop into League One from the Championship, before potentially moving onto other targets. Reading striker Marc McNulty and Birmingham City’s Greg Stewart have emerged as other options for Jack Ross’ side.

Grigg is still the one they want though. The 27-year-old has played 17 times in all competition for Paul Cook’s side this season, scoring four times.

He has been one of the most prolific strikers in the third tier over recent times, hence why Sunderland are so keen to land him this month to help in their promotion charge.

Grigg scored 28 goals in the 2015/16 season for Wigan to fire them to the League One title. He couldn’t prevent them from relegation from the Championship in the following campaign but fired another 26 goals in all competitions last season to get the North-West side the title again and back into the second tier.

The Solihull-born striker started his career at Walsall and he spent five years there before earning a move to Brentford in 2013. Grigg spent a single campaign with the London side and had a loan spell at MK Dons, where he scored 22 goals, before joining Wigan in 2015 for around £1 million.
