Tony Mowbray discusses injury concern regarding Blackburn Rovers skipper

Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has said that he is concerned about skipper Charlie Mulgrew’s hamstring injury, and he is unlikely to play in Rovers’ Tuesday night game against relegation candidates Wigan Athletic.

Blackburn Rovers captain Charlie Mulgrew is a doubt for their midweek game with Wigan Athletic at Ewood Park, manager Tony Mowbray has revealed.

In Rovers’ 1-0 loss to local rivals Preston, Mulgrew was substituted halfway through the second half. Amari’i Bell came on to replace him after 72 minutes. Now, speaking to the club website, Mowbray has provided an update on the injury to the defender.

“He’s got his hamstring strapped up,” Mowbray said when asked about the Scot’s injury.

“The schedule has been intense, and I’d suggest that Charlie Mulgrew has felt that pressure of my tongue in recent weeks.

“I’ve been saying ‘come on, you’re 6’4′, you have to win headers, teams are throwing balls into our box, where are you?’ So I think his body has been tense, but I thought he was really good today, he was dominant, he headed the ball, attacked the ball and played forward.

Mowbray accepted that maybe he was somewhat to blame for the injury to Mulgrew, admitting that some of his “moaning” could’ve had a knock on effect.

“Unfortunately, maybe because of the anxiety of his manager moaning at him, he’s been uptight and his hamstring has strained. That’s how it looks to me. We’ll see, hopefully, the lay-off isn’t that long.”

Mulgrew has missed parts of this season through injury but has still managed to play an important role as captain in the 26 Championship games he has played in. From centre-back, he has netted a highly impressive ten goals with eight games of the season left to go.
