Wigan Athletic legend linked with Celtic managerial role

Former Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez is being linked with the potential managerial vacancy at Glasgow giants Celtic according to reports by the Daily Record.

The Ladbrokes Premiership champions saw former boss Brendan Rodgers leave the club last month in favour of a move to English Premier League outfit Leicester City.

Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon has returned to the club to fill the vacancy left by Rodgers’ departure until the end of the season. The 47-year-old is keen to land the job on a permanent basis, however, it has been suggested that former Wigan Athletic manager Martinez could be in the running for the role.

Martinez is currently managing the Belgian national team who he guided to a respectable third place finish at last summer’s FIFA World Cup in Russia. The Spaniard has won 24 of his 33 matches in charge of the nation.

During his playing career, Martinez won the old Third Division with Wigan Athletic while he also lifted the Football League Trophy with The Latics. He returned to the DW Stadium in summer 2009 to become the Lancashire club’s new manager. Martinez kept Athletic in the English Premier League for four seasons while he guided them to their first major cup success in 2013 when they lifted the Emirates FA Cup.

Martinez has not managed at club level since being sacked by former club Everton in May 2016.
