Wigan Athletic release six players including Darron Gibson and Callum McManaman

Wigan Athletic have released six players at the end of their contracts with players set to leave including Darron Gibson and Callum McManaman as confirmed by the club website.

The Latics are coming off the back of a good season where they finally ended their yo-yoing between the Sky Bet Championship and Sky Bet League One by finishing 18th in the division. Next season they will want to push up the table and that means changing the squad and releasing some players that they no longer need.

And they have now confirmed that six of the players will be leaving the club this summer when their contracts end. The biggest name to be departing is Gibson, a 31-year-old midfielder who came through the Manchester United academy. He was in and out of the first team for Wigan since signing for them last season and will now have to find a new club. Another big name to be departing is McManaman who was once hailed as the next big thing after his performances helped them to win the FA Cup. He returned to the club after a few years away last year but struggled to break into the first team and is now a free agent.

The other four players leaving this summer are Shaun MacDonald, Jonas Olsson, James Vaughan and Dan Lavercombe. MacDonald had been at the club for three years and had made 39 appearances before today’s release. Olsson had only signed for the Latics in February but had not done enough to earn a longer term deal.
