Blues Linked With Loan Move For Birmingham Striker
Sunday, 20th Jun 2021 09:31

Town are reportedly keen on recruiting Birmingham City striker Sam Cosgrove on loan.

According to The Sun on Sunday, Birmingham manager and former Blues midfielder Lee Bowyer will allow the 24-year-old to depart on loan this summer.

Town are said to be plotting an “ambitious” move for the 6ft 4in tall frontman, but may have to wait to see whether Championship clubs show interest.

Beverley-born Cosgrove joined Birmingham from Aberdeen in January for a reported £2 million. However, he failed to score in two starts and 10 sub appearances for the Midlanders.

Cosgrove was a schoolboy with Everton before moving on to Wigan’s youth set-up at 16. While with the Latics he spent time on loan at Barrow, Chorley, Nantwich and North Ferriby United.

He left Wigan for Carlisle in the summer of 2017 just prior to Paul Cook taking charge having made one Carabao Cup sub appearance.

After a year at Brunton Park, Cosgrove moved on to Aberdeen where he enjoyed a successful spell, scoring 47 goals in 85 starts and 18 sub appearances.

Very impressive record at Aberdeen which must be on par with league one football at least and still quite young.

I wonder why he has hardly featured for Birmingham?

Hoping that loans will be used as a last resort. One or two very good loans is okay, but hoping we build a team not just for this season, but seasons to come.

jas0999I'm like you about loans.Would much rather we moved away from them as we need to build a team for the future. He does appear to have struggled since moving south but under the right manager could well flourish into a very good striker.

Problem is that old chestnut “ waiting to see if championship clubs want the player ……”

At least we are aiming for a higher calibre of player . But with that comes the frustration that we are competing with Championship Clubs, and therefore either stand little chance of getting these players , or we are waiting until near the end of the window to stand any chance of getting said player. Problem is we can't afford to wait until the 12th hour can we .

Did very well in Scotland.
Probably would be a decent signing at league one but I'd rather we get permanent deals in.

ArnieM. I agree with you totally, it just remains to be seen how much cash the new owners have given Cook to play with. We do need championship players to get us there.

We haven't the resources to sign an almost new squad at the quality we need. Far better to spend what we have on fewer good players, than to spread the money on a greater number of lesser players.

If this lad is up to it then it will be money well spent, if not then we won't be stuck with him as with Jackson.

Not totally against year long loan deals possibly two or three per season. You can make a permanent signing that doesn't work out for one reason or another and can work out to be a expensive mistake for the club. If the player on loan impresses and likes the club and the area you might be in a position to buy him. Two players that come to mind are Jim Magilton and Daryl Murphy who both were originally on loan i think ?

Would be a fantastic signing. Have him for the season with option to buy next summer.

You couldn't argue with loans like Celina or Lawrence etc when we were getting players who were well above the average for the league we were in. If this rumour is true it might point to frustration over the permanent signings we wanted. Bringing in almost an entire new first team
Squad whilst maintaining quality control is fanciful thinking by the new owners and Cook

Think it's it's far too early to be suggesting Town are frustrated in this window . Better to try for quality players snd face competition for their signature, than the usual ten a penny journeymen thst we normally sign up ( to later regret ) !

ArnieM I would agree 100% but for the fact Cook and the owners have stated they are shipping out all but 4/5 players. It's crazy to think that sort of turnover is possible without bringing in players no better or possibly worse than we have. Wages are the key and any player worth £1m whether on a free or not will want minimum £10k per week. It's simply not viable to change the squad as has been claimed is going to happen without signing some duds or overpaying on wages, which is not good for the team morale.

Think PC going to have to eat humble pie as I can't see us shipping 90% of players as suggested by Brett. Unless we can get deals done and stay with FFP we have a big problem. We can only loan so many players as we've known in the past it doesn't always work out.

Monkey blue why don't you go comment on Alan lees interview about cook instead of commenting same old cr@p! He wants people to want to play for the club and fight he never told them they HAVE to go but said they can if they want. You and Betty don't give anyone new a chance. This guy has to better than Jackson anyway you keep harping on about last seasons squad being so good but we finished where we deserved so you're one of the only ones who can't see it? We needed to get rid. He wants a smaller squad with more quality anyway who are you to say the players so far bought in, this guy and the others aren't better?? If you've literally nothing positive to say go support the budgies you're becoming a joke

Monkeyblue here's the link? Anyone with half a brain could tell he's not trying to get rid of everyone but trying to see who wants to stay and who wants to go quite rightly so! Here's the link we'd love to hear your thoughts on it?

Beatties - i would agree with you about getting a reaction, but then Ashton said the same a week ago. One thing from a manager but not from a chairman. They are intent in getting rid of them, if not now but by January.

I am staying cool about players until friday 25 june approx 10pm. If we only have another 2 or 3 then we are in trouble.

We are now well behind a number of clubs in this division for incoming players.

As for Alan Lee interview, he had no time for hurst or lambert but a lot of time for McCarthy and agreed with his style of football. Just wasn't pretty for us fans.

There is one good reason why Town won't be shipping out many players and that is nobody wants them. There are the odd exceptions but we had a terrible squad of mediocre players who struggled in league one.. GK and Strikers needed as we still haven't addressed the goals situation albeit our wing back is attack minded. Norwood good back up if he stays fit.

BeattiesBackPocket We all want players who want to play for the club. Name the ones we have who don't? Also if you are talking about new signings…. If we offer the same money as a championship club they will pick the championship club and that doesn't suggest a bad attitude, that's just common sense as they aren't “fans” of ITFC in the main, they are looking out for their career and their future. If we are offering more to get them here…. Sort of stands to rights, it was the money that played a part. You need to live in the real world. Marcus Stewart didn't want to leave Huddersfield. We can't over pay and that's the only way we will get in demand championship players. I am not the one who suggested only 4 of last seasons squad was staying. That would still need 16 players to form Cooks 20. Even if 3 or 4 of them change his mind that's a dozen players. If you want to live on some cloud of blind optimism then do so. If you expect 12 or more players in that are better than we have maybe you know more about our wage budget and what players are asking for than the rest of us. Also watched the podcasts and commented that it was very illuminating. If only morons hadn't forced MM out, demanded a young manager to bring in lower league talent…. Maybe we wouldn't be having this discussion. MM wouldn't have got us relegated, but with the financial backing the new owners are happy to give, he'd be plotting a premiership return.

it was only a matter of time before Monkey brought MM into it, thats his problem he is still not over it, say no more Monkey lol.

I don't disagree completely on the mm part but fans don't hire and sack managers owners do and that lies with evans the same as it did him talking about promotion pushes when mick said his only remit was to stay in the league. End of the day you're being far to literal you want kids in the team as you've said plenty of times we've signed about 5 kids up, Dobra is looking to come back fighting well have another 5 odd players who will be kept on from last years first team plus the couple we've already signed including one who we beat championship clubs to buy you appear to have forgotten all that add another 5 or 6 players they have said we are looking at with one or two loans and we have 20 players a smaller tight nit group with more quality. You really need to give the new owners a chance we can't sign most players or at least announce players until July 1st as most people who know football will know plus most on holiday which is why it takes a while during this time tell me how many other clubs have made signings?? Exactly it's quiet due to this fact. Mick as much as I like the guy is playing prehistoric football he had a good start at Cardiff then they struggled any club wolves or Sunderland will tell you he had a shelf life of 3 years same as he did at ours. Should he have had money when top during that freak season of murphys?? Too right he should've but again evans fault! Blame anyone blame evans for the excessive amount of players out of contract for one.
Just for once realise the old regime was to blame and now these guys have to pick up the slack from it. Cook has a way bigger job than any manager weve ever had so how about getting behind him the new owners and team instead of slagging the club off at every opportunity.

People already moaning about loans I agree if it ends up being 5 or 6 like past few seasons but again everyone's assuming the worst instead of giving these new owners managers etc a chance. It may only be a couple which EVERY league one and championship club does. It's incredible the clubs been run into the ground past 14 years someone's come in to try make us great again and give us our club back yet you don't give them a chance.

KiwiBlue2 added 07:08 - Jun 21
I think a limit of 2 or maybe 3 loans would be ok provided that they are of the quality of a Ryan Fraser, Tom Lawrence or Celina. That is they lift the overall quality of the squad. While we have a couple of new players in I expect we will see a couple of keepers (MacGillivray and the Liverpool lad)
and hopefully Harper and a striker or two. Supplement that with a couple of high quality loans and a couple of players that we will hear of over the next few weeks and we are shaping up nicely as we still a few players that are up to the task, e.g. Downes, Norwood, Bishop, Woolfie.
One area that we need to strengthen that hasnt featured yet is centre back. A solid and experienced cb would be good.
