Wigan Athletic 2-0 Bristol Rovers

Wigan secured victory against fellow mid-table side Bristol Rovers at the DW Stadium, thanks to a goal in either half from Josh Magennis and Jonny Smith to finish the League One campaign on a high.

Baba Adeeko saw a powerful early shot tipped round the post by Rovers goalkeeper Jed Ward before Magennis headed wide from a Smith cross.

Ward made a fine save to keep out Thelo Aasgaard's header off a Charlie Hughes cross while ex-Wigan man Scott Sinclair had a shot deflected wide at the other end.

But that was about as good as it got for Rovers, who fell behind on the half-hour as Magennis steered home Luke Chambers' cross.

Smith doubled the lead himself three minutes after the restart when he cut in off the right-hand side and fired into the opposite corner of the net.

Magennis thought he had added a third when he side-footed home from another Chambers cross, only to turn and see the offside flag up.

Aasgaard sent a 25-yard shot flying inches over the top before substitute Martial Godo fired past Ward only for James Wilson to somehow get back and clear the ball off the line.

Excellent end to the season for us. It looked much more challenging at various stages this season. Delighted that the 8-point deduction made no difference for us really, and pleased that for Reading that theirs made no difference either. No thanks to the EFL of course.

A good finish to the season. We have the makings of a good team for next season.
But Shaun will need some financial support to improve the squad.
Will have to see if that happens.

A very happy and satisfying way to close the season. Three straight wins, away at Lincoln City, away at Portsmouth, and a clean sheet at home vs Bristol Rovers. Finishing 12th, which is Wigan's first time in the top half of the table all season. The key to the season was Wigan winning three of their first four matches to quickly get off the -8 to plus points. Well done, Wigan Athletic!!!

Considering the pre-season debacle, for Wigan to have amassed 70 points this season is nothing short of a miracle. Shaun Maloney should be on the shortlist for manager of the year after what he has had to endure. Yet there are some fans who want rid of him and wont renew their STs because of him. Who needs fans like that anyway? Certainly not the Latics!

A successful campaign for the Latics. Fighting for survival from the start they took 10 points from their first 4 games moving out of the last 4 in August. Six points came from visits to Derby and Bolton who might both be playing at a higher level soon. And now a finish on a high note in the top half of the table. Augurs well for a new season.

Couldn't find fault with any players today. Looked like a squad on a mission. Felt like a stadium behind its team. Great end to a difficult season. 2024/2025's season ticket already budgeted for...

With the club losing £100k per week, and dismal season ticket sales - it will soon be time for Rovers to relocate again.

Thank goodness that season is over - Rovers vacillated between mediocre and poor. I shudder to think what Taylor will do with a transfer budget - I’m hoping in vain that his name will be on next week’s released list.

We need to invest heavily next season if want to progress and get back to the championship and stabilisation is a must.

Stabilization is more important than splashing the cash on overpriced overpaid thirty somethings. Hopefully some of the guests of the season ticket holders will have been sufficiently impressed with the atmosphere and style to purchase a season ticket for next year, which will further stabilise the financial situation and allow for investment.
